Welcome to Cuan Cottage, our
'sheltered haven' on the shores of
Strangford Lough.
This 100 year old, stone built,
fisherman's cottage sits on a narrow
street running down to the marina.
The cottage consists of a cosy
living room, comfortable master
bedroom, a second bedroom furnished
with bunk beds and a well equipped
kitchen/dining room, stocked with
oil, condiments and all the basics
such as tea and coffee, and
including a Welcome Pack to get you
started! Outside we have our
sheltered, south facing cottage
garden, complete with garden
furniture, barbeque and hammock - an
ideal suntrap for lazing in, after
an active day out and about!
The island-studded Strangford Lough,
is the largest sea lough in the UK &
Ireland, covering 80 square nautical
miles. It is approached from the
Irish Sea through the fast-running
tidal 'Narrows' which open out into
more gentle waters. The Viking
invaders who arrived here in their
long boats through the fast flowing
'Narrows', bestowed the name
Strangfj'rthr or "place of strong
currents". By contrast, the calmer
waters of the main, shallow basin
further north gave this Lough its
old Irish name, Lough Cuan, meaning
"harbour" or "sheltered haven". It's
the old Irish name for the lough
that proved the inspiration for Cuan
Cottage, which we think of as our
"sheltered haven", away from the
pressures of modern life, and we're
sure you'll love it whether you
visit for a romantic get-away, a
family holiday, an active break or
just to let your hair down and enjoy
the craic!
This relaxing home is only yards
from the marina, the ferry and the
excellent restaurants, cafes and
pubs of the village. Enjoy the
relaxing charm of Portaferry or
cross the Lough and savour the
atmosphere of Strangford village.
The Ferry sails every half hour,
every day of the year (except
Christmas Day) providing a link with
South Down, Downpatrick and the
Mournes.
You may be an outdoors fanatic,
revelling in the water sports,
fishing, nature, beaches and many
activities offered in the area, you
may love to roam the countryside and
cycle the deserted lanes, or to play
the many local golf courses. Or you
may simply love to sit out on the
seafront, or outside one of our
great local pubs, enjoying a pint
'of the black stuff', and watching
the world go by! Whatever your
choice, Cuan Cottage offers a haven
of comfort and warmth to return to.
Alternatively, why not just close
over the curtains and settle into
the sofa with an old film? Or pick
up a good book, pour a cold glass of
wine and forget your troubles,
lazing in the garden. We think we've
provided all you could want in your
home from home, and we hope you
choose Cuan Cottage for a great
break, and come back again and
again!
