Mourne MountainsThe Sandpiper was an old school house which was recently rebuilt to a high specification as a holiday home. It is located near Cranfield between Kilkeel and Rostrevor. It has panoramic views of the Mourne Mountains, Irish Sea and Carlingford Lough. Situated in this picturesque area Sandpiper is good for a family beach holiday, a mountain walking holiday and ideal as a base for those who would like to tour around this beautiful location.

Sandpiper is one hours drive from Belfast and two hours from Dublin. The nearby charming fishing port of Kilkeel offers a good supermarket and excellent small shops, pubs and restaurants. Other attractions include good beaches a short walk away; golf, pony trekking and fishing.

There is a 35ft living room/dining room with well-fitted kitchen at one end. A cloakroom off the hall with toilet and basin completes downstairs. Upstairs there are two large bedrooms and bathroom.

Walking: The Sandpiper is ideally situated between the sea and the mountains. If you want to walk without driving there are a number of possibilities: You can walk through the Sandilands caravan site to the beach and if the tide is out the beach stretches for at least a mile in each direction. You can walk to Greencastle with its 13th century castle . You can walk along the banks of the Whitewater river. If you want to walk in the mountains there are walks suitable for all levels of ability. There are a number of car parks scattered around the periphery of the mountains. The daddy of all the climbs has to be Slieve Donard (2796ft or 850m) straight up from the sea, starting from car park either at Bloody Bridge on the Newcastle to Annalong road or at the Donard Car Park in Newcastle.

Swimming: The closest beach is accessed by walking through the Sandilands caravan site or alternatively the main Cranfield beach (blue flagged) with facilities and lifeguards (in the holiday season) is only a few minutes drive away. If the weather is inclement or swimming in a pool is more your thing then there are pools in Kilkeel and Newry. If you want to soak rather than swim there is a Seaweed bath in Newcastle. There are also Spa facilities in the Slieve Donard and Burrendale Hotels in Newcastle.

Carlingford LoughCycling: There are a number of routes of varying lengths and difficulties by the coast and in the mountains that can be cycled from Cranfield. Apart from the rather basic and ancient mountain bike kept at The Sandpiper bicycles can be hired in Kilkeel (Quinn Cycles 028-4176 2654) and Warrenpoint ( Stewart Cycles 028-4177 3565).

Fishing: There is a mixture of Lake and River Fishing available most of which requires a permit or day licence. Sea fishing in Carlingford Lough can be arranged from a number of centres.

Sailing: The closest slipway is at cranfield beach.  Applications for use apply to Warrenpoint Tourist Office 028-4175 2256. Shopping: Apart from the local shops and the usual shops in Kilkeel the major shopping experience can be had in Newry.

We had a fab holiday. The Sandpiper was a lovely, clean, neat, tidy house with everything. Plenty to do in the area and even the weather was good! we’ll be back in Northern Ireland for sure.

Assistance:

The cottage can be seen straight ahead, dead centre, as you look. Click on the icon in the top right corner to view in full screen. (Escape will allow you to exit full screen mode). Hold the left button on your mouse and drag to view from different angles. To move along the road either click the arrows on the road or choose a spot further along the road and left click your mouse once to advance! (If you don't move your mouse far enough away you will see a magnifying glass in your circle, move a bit further and it disappears. Click and advance! If you find yourself activating the magnifying glass simply right click and zoom out.)

You will have noticed a small window to the bottom right with a little yellow man in the centre. What you are seeing in the main window is the view through his eyes. This window can be enlarged by clicking the arrow in the top left corner. Use the '+' and '-' to zoom in/out. You can also drag the yellow man to e.g. the nearest town and have a quick tour before you arrive! Of course the blue icon represents the location of the cottage.

Have fun and we hope you enjoy your holiday ...
